From a Small Manufacturing Town in Massachusetts Came America’s #1 Awning
Founded in 1988, SunSetter has become America’s #1 Awning manufacturer. About a third of all awnings purchased in the United States each year are made by SunSetter.
The company traces its roots to a Malden, Massachusetts, where Jonathan Hershberg followed in his father’s footsteps in the awning business.
Jonathan’s father, Hyman, built roll-up awnings for RVs. But Jonathan took the family tradition in a different direction. Jonathan built awnings to be installed on the sides of homes. So, just a few doors away from his father’s old factory, SunSetter was born.
The SunSetter 900 Model quickly became a hit (it later became the 10000XT). To grow the company, Jonathan Hershberg partnered with Ido Eilam and Les Snader. Together, the three men set out to bring the SunSetter message to all of America.
In the company’s early years, the primary means of marketing the SunSetter retractable awning was home shows. But in time, the company added television advertising to the marketing mix, particularly infomercials.
Many of today’s SunSetter owners were introduced to retractable awnings through the SunSetter infomercial. That infomercial ran for years, becoming one of the most successful infomercials of all time. The message of the infomercial is simple: improving your lifestyle by gaining more outdoor living space under a SunSetter retractable awning. And that message still resonates today with the thousands of people who every year heed the call to start living better in their own backyard oasis.
In 2016, Springs Window Fashions acquired SunSetter, and the company continues to be the leader in the residential awning market. The shades are manufactured in Texas while the business operations are in Wisconsin, and every awning, retractable screen, and exterior solar shade the company makes continues to be of the highest quality.
