A History of SunSetter

From a Small Manufacturing Town in Massachusetts Came America’s #1 Awning

What began as a local business in a small manufacturing town has grown into a national success story. Since its founding in 1988, SunSetter has become America’s #1 awning manufacturer, with roughly one in every three awnings sold in the U.S. proudly bearing the SunSetter name

A Family Legacy of Innovation

SunSetter’s story starts in Malden, Massachusetts, where founder Jonathan Hershberg built on a family legacy. His father, Hyman Hershberg, had spent years crafting roll-up awnings for RVs. Inspired by his father's work—but with a vision all his own—Jonathan set out to create retractable awnings for residential homes.

Just down the street from his father’s old factory, SunSetter Products was born.

The Product That Sparked a Movement

SunSetter's first big success came with the SunSetter 900 Model, which quickly became a customer favorite and eventually evolved into the 1000XT. As demand grew, Jonathan teamed up with Ido Eilam and Les Snader, forming a partnership that would help propel the company to national prominence.

Their goal was clear: bring the comfort and style of SunSetter awnings to homes across America.

Marketing That Made History

In its early days, SunSetter gained traction by showcasing its products at home shows. But it was the company’s strategic shift to television marketing—especially infomercials—that made SunSetter a household name.

The iconic SunSetter infomercial introduced millions of homeowners to the concept of outdoor living reimagined. Its message was simple yet powerful: extend your living space and enjoy more comfort, shade, and style with a SunSetter awning. That message still resonates today with thousands of new customers every year.

A New Chapter, Same Commitment to Quality

In 2016, SunSetter was acquired by Springs Window Fashions, a move that allowed the company to continue growing while maintaining its industry-leading quality and service. Today, SunSetter awnings, retractable screens, and exterior solar shades are manufactured in Texas, with business operations based in Wisconsin.

From production to installation, every SunSetter product reflects a commitment to craftsmanship, durability, and outdoor comfort.
